American Market
About This Spot
Step into American Market on Nicholson Drive and you’ll immediately notice the warm, unpretentious charm that has quietly anchored this Baton Rouge neighborhood for years. It’s the kind of place where the pace slows just enough to enjoy a thoughtful moment between the bustle of the day and the comfort of a satisfying meal. The atmosphere hums with that familiar, satisfied energy of locals who’ve come here time and again—whether grabbing a quick sandwich on the way home or picking up essentials for a casual evening with friends.
This deli and sandwich shop isn’t about flash or fine dining formality; it’s about honest, straightforward comfort with a local twist. The scent of freshly toasted bread mingling with the spice hints at the Cajun-inspired flavors tucked inside their sandwiches. There’s a welcoming ease in seeing neighbors and LSU students alike weaving through the space, drawn back by the dependable quality and friendly faces behind the counter.
Ordering here feels like a small ritual—selecting from familiar favorites like a well-spiced Cajun turkey or a hearty roast beef, each sandwich crafted to offer generous portions and a balance of texture and flavor. Alongside the food, the well-stocked beverage selection, including local beers and thoughtful mixers, reflects the way this spot serves as a hub for more than just a quick bite—it’s part of life’s routine and the quieter celebrations in between.
What makes American Market truly distinctive is how it captures the spirit of Baton Rouge itself: rooted in tradition but effortlessly accommodating the ebb and flow of daily life. In a place that values genuine connection, you’re just as likely to exchange a kind word with the staff as you are to savor a perfectly assembled po'boy. It’s this blend of familiarity, flavor, and human moments that keeps people coming back—turning a simple deli stop into a quietly meaningful part of their day.

A little pricy from yester-year, but enjoyed my favorite the cajun turkey breast poboy toasted with chips and soda...

Po-boys are exceptional, very friendly staff and great selection of snacks. Big liquor section, with wine, mixers and spirits. Every beverage under the sun. Go-to for sandwich pickup on the way to the house. Definitely check them out.

I have been going here for 4 years from freshman year to graduation at LSU and have enjoyed it so much I have gone at least twice a week for all 4 years. Prices are not as bad as any other place around and the food is the best sandwich in Baton Rouge. Love the place, the food, the people. Could not recommend it any more.

This place is bar-none THE staple of the everyday living people of Baton Rouge. For the price vs quantity and value, their poboys are the epitome of value added return. The staff are always nice and amenable. The place itself is a little eccentric, if it weren't a college town, but if you *need* a great sandwich, search no further.

Absolutely one of the best Po-Boys in Baton Rouge. My parents have been bringing me here since I was young and they haven’t let me down once in the food or the service. Now that I’m old enough I get general groceries, occasional Po-Boys, and a case of beer for the guys while I’m here and I have never been let down. Totally recommend going to get a Po-Boy at least once here and if you like it you should try to be a regular customer.

Yes, the process have gone up, but the pressed po-boys are still great. Also, solid selection of liquor - and by solid, I mean surprisingly deep with options.
